HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE

SCHOLARSHIPS

A growing number of military friendly organizations are offering scholarships and other financial aid to active duty Servicemembers, former Servicemembers, and their dependants. Scholarships and financial aid are often based on need and merit, not just prior education.
Before you begin your search, be sure that you understand the conditions of any agreements you sign. Educate yourself about scholarships and student loans by reading handbooks such as "Need a Lift". Also review the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) information about scholarship scams.
There are over 650 listed scholarships in the Military Community Scholarship & Financial Aid Explorer (MCSFeX) platform that are particularly military friendly.

MONTGOMERY GI BILL

The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

FEDERAL STUDENT AID

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step in the financial aid process. Use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as Pell grant, student loans, and college work-study. In addition, most states and schools use FAFSA information to award their financial aid. For introductory instructions on how to complete the FAFSA online or on paper go to Completing the FAFSA.
